Thanksgiving Cocktail: The Orchard Boulevardier

Happy Thanksgiving! With all the turkey and stuffing and pumpkin pie on your mind today, not to mention trying to navigate through spending time with family and friends, maybe cocktails aren’t the first thing you think of. But trust me, it’s a holiday, you’re going to need them. So here’s a cocktail that’s perfectly balanced to help fight off the food coma you’ll surely find yourself in.

The orchard boulevardier is a take on the classic boulevardier and combines apple cider, rye whiskey, Campari, and sweet vermouth. While this drink still has a little bitterness and bite from the sweet vermouth and Campari, the rye whiskey and cider tame most of the agression. It’s a perfect aperitif for after a huge meal.

The History

This recipe comes from María del Mar Sacasa, author of the terrific book, Winter Cocktails. It serves two.

The Recipe

  • 8 ounces apple cider
  • 4 ounces rye whiskey
  • 2 ounces Campari
  • 2 ounces sweet vermouth

In a medium saucepan, bring apple cider to a simmer. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir the whole mixture until warm. Pour into two heatproof mugs or glasses. Garnish with an orange twist.

The Seattle Whiskey Collective would like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy the long weekend as you gather with family and friends.
